<surgeon> Transplant rejection occurs when the immune system of the recipient
of a transplant attacks the transplanted organ or tissue. This is because a normal
healthy human immune system can distinguish foreign tissues and attempts to destroy
them, just as it attempts to destroy infective organisms such as bacteria and
viruses. Hyperacute rejection is a complement-mediated response in recipients
with pre-existing antibodies to the donor (for example, ABO blood type antibodies).
Hyperacute rejection occurs within minutes and the transplant must be immediately
removed to prevent a severe systemic inflammatory response. Rapid coagulation
of the blood occurs. This is a particular risk in kidney transplants, and so
a prospective cytotoxic crossmatch is performed prior to kidney transplantation
to ensure that antibodies to the donor are not present. For other organs, hyperacute
rejection is prevented by transplanting only ABO-compatible grafts. Hyperacute
rejection is the likely outcome of xenotransplanted organs
has the performance statred?3
<surgeon> Acute rejection is generally acknowledged to be mediated by T
cell responses to proteins from the donor organ which differ from those found
in the recipient. Unlike antibody-mediated hyperacute rejection, development
of T cell responses first occurs several days after a transplant if the patient
is not taking immunosuppressant drugs. Since the development of powerful immunosuppressive
drugs such as cyclosporin, tacrolimus and rapamycin, the incidence of acute rejection
has been greatly decreased, however, organ transplant recipients can develop
acute rejection episodes months to years after transplantation. Acute rejection
episodes can destroy the transplant if it is not recognized and treated appropriately.
Episodes occur in around 60-75% of first kidney transplants, and 50 to 60% of
liver transplants
i'm listening
)))
<surgeon> A single episode is not a cause for concern if recognised and
treated promptly and rarely leads to organ failure, but recurrent episodes are
associated with chronic rejection of grafts. The bulk of the immune system response
is to the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) proteins. MHC proteins are involved
in the presentation of foreign antigens to T cells, and receptors on the surface
of the T cell (TCR) are uniquely suited to recognition of proteins of this type.
MHC are highly variable between individuals, and therefore the T cells from the
host recognize the foreign MHC with a very high frequency leading to powerful
immune responses that cause rejection of transplanted tissue. Identical twins
and cloned tissue are MHC matched, and are therefore not subject to T cell mediated
rejection. The first successful organ transplant was performed between identical
twins by Dr. Joseph Murray at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. This
transplant was successful because no T cell mediated responses were generated
to the transplanted organ. Dr. Murray later received a Nobel prize for his work
<sociologist> Social rejection exists in a variety of different forms and
includes both interpersonal rejection or peer rejection, and romantic rejection.
It occurs when an individual is deliberately excluded from a social relationship
or social interaction. A person can be rejected on an individual basis or by
an entire group of people. Furthermore, rejection can occur either actively by
bullying, teasing, or ridiculing, or passively by ignoring the rejected person
(e.g. the silent treatment). Rejection can be perceived when it is not actually
present. Because humans are social creatures, and because it is impossible to
interact with everyone all the time, some level of rejection is an inevitable
part of life. However, rejection can become a problem when it is excessive, when
the relationship is important, when the rejection is by an entire group, or when
the individual is particularly sensitive to rejection. The experience of rejection
can potentially lead to a number of adverse psychological consequences such as
loneliness, reduced self-esteem, aggression, and depression. It can also
lead to feelings of insecurity and a heightened sensitivity to future rejection
<sociologist> Rejection can be emotionally painful because of the social
nature of human beings and our basic need to be accepted in groups. Abraham Maslow
and other theorists have suggested that the need for love and belongingness is
a fundamental human motivation. All humans, even introverts, require a certain
amount of social acceptance and interaction to be psychologically healthy. Being
a member of a group is important for social identity, which is a key component
of the self-concept. Rejection by an entire group of people can have especially
adverse effects, particularly when it results in social isolation. Social psychological
research confirms the motivational basis of the need for acceptance. Specifically,
fear of rejection can lead to conformity to peer pressure (sometimes called normative
influence), and compliance to the demands of others. Our need for affiliation
and social interaction appears to be particularly strong when we are under stress
oups very long to read...
where has this text been generated?
it's possible to save this screen text here ..?
<rejection> good evening and good day!
yes
to read later again
yes
<rejection> I'd like to give a little rundown on my subject of expertise
good morning
<rejection> then I am going to ask you to answer some questions and talk
about your own experiences
<rejection> the brain perceives rejection as a mortal threat, and the main
responses to stress or danger are
<rejection> freeze
<rejection> flight
<rejection> fight
<rejection> it starts with shock and disbelief, leads into different stages
that entail anger and depression and ultimately leads to letting go and resolution
<rejection> let yourself go through it. If you feel like youre going
to fall, and if you go with it you probably wont get injured.
<rejection> If you resist, youll be much more likely to get injured
<rejection> FREEZE is that profound sense of block and immovability. It
even goes along with brain freeze, where you have trouble thinking and making
sense of things
<rejection> FLIGHT is more the heart pumping, the anxiety, the tingling
or numbness in ones body
<rejection> FIGHT doesnt mean trying to strike back at the rejector
<rejection> It means persevering until you prevail, and it also means really
working at your craft in a way that is between you and yourself
<rejection> so here are my questions
<rejection> when you hear the word 'rejection', what are the first 3 words
which come to your mind?
<rejection> you out there
sad
<rejection> yes
mad
<rejection> any words?

it is robotic
it is a computer

it's your live voice transformed?
no
it's text2speech
<james> bots trying to learn about rejection
the computer reads the text aloud
<suzon> so it was funny to read people b4 the show commenting about self
identity!!!!
UpStage has about 100 different voices
ok
<james> different accents
<surgeon> like this
How do you choose which one to use.

hen: but we are looking at ways to have a "volunteer" from the
audience
so i have questions too ;) :words write is silent?
hi
<surgeon> oh oh
hen: so someone from audience can take a temporary avatar and come on stage
hen: the words the audience write are silent, yet
yes
<surgeon> and really reak havoc
<sociologist> that would be really cool in next performance
hen: it is possible for the avatars to speak silently
hen: james can you show them thinking?
interesting to ask what happens between you and us
<sociologist> ah yes we didnt use the thought balloon
also about this robotoic voice of control

and cloned tissue are MHC matched, and are therefore not subject to T cell mediated
It can also lead
to feelings of insecurity and a heightened sensitivity to future rejection

<rejection> artists are creative heroes striving against the odds
yeah yeah ...
<rejection> they dont create to succeed. They create to create. They try
to succeed to prevail and live, but they create to create
not me
<rejection> no?
<rejection> but because they often work in isolation, they get rejected
in isolation and need the web of connection and mutual support to help break
the fall and bounce back
i am not of that kind!
they are init for the money and fame surely
